BOG OUT Got Me Out – Customer Story

Ooops – that’s what I call bogged

Our customer in NSW got severely stuck last week, before you watch the action – maybe read his whole story below…

I’m kinda new to 4wding. I bought a 2000 Landcruiser recently, got a bit of 4wd gear and set out on an adventure a couple of weeks ago. I took my kids and my Dad and IT WAS SO MUCH FUN! The Cruiser handled everything beautifully on some pretty gnarly stuff. We spent about an hour of that day stuck, unable to make it up the last hurdle, luckily we were able to manoeuvre out and all was good.

This made me think that I really need some recovery gear (der!). I went into the local 4wd shop, and they said that I’d need a new bullbar (I’ve got a factory Alloy one) and then a winch, and it would only cost me $1800 for the bullbar and another $2000-3000 for a winch! Bargain NOT – my whole car only cost $6500!

So I did some research, and found I could probably get away with a bull bar for around $950 and a winch for around $400, but that’s still a big outlay on a cheap vehicle, and what about when (or if) I change vehicles. So I kept researching and came across Bog Out and I thought, now that’s a good idea. I looked at all the weight loadings and thought I’d give it a crack. What have I got to lose? Fairly cheap insurance with two Bog Outs and two Ropes – certainly worth a try.

They arrived in the mail on Monday, and I had a hankering to go out for a quick 4wd yesterday arvo so at the last minute I invited my dad and my son, and we went bush (about 15mins from our house). Luckily, I threw in the Bog Outs, but wasn’t really planning on spending the afternoon stuck. The adventure didn’t start so well, when I went to let down all the tyres, the valve shot out and we lost it – we flogged one from the spare and were back on the road (and now I know how to use a tyre deflator properly and how to get my spare off).

We were travelling along and my son who’s a bit of a scaredy cat said we should test all the puddles with a stick first, I said, ‘Where’s your sense of adventure’, and we happily made our way through some big puddles, having a heap of fun.

We came to a bit of a sketchy part of the track so we all got out to take a look. There were two options and we took the easier one. I planned a good driving line (my father concurred) and went for it. The problem was that I didn’t count on there being so much slip and we kinda fell into a hole. I tried to manoeuvre out but ended up getting deeper in the hole (with my muffler bubbling away in the puddle). I told my dad, ‘I think it’s time for the Bog Out’ and so we went to work.

We attached it to the front wheel nicely using method one, and had it all attached to a tree, and slowly accelerated in low range… nothing happened. My Cruiser doesn’t have a diff locker on the front, and the wheel went nowhere.

Ready for Action

So thankfully you can use the Bog Out in reverse as well, so we attached it to the rear wheel using method 1 and around a tree. I did read the instructions and thought there was enough clearance near the brake for method 1, apparently not… I put it in reverse and slowly accelerated. It pulled me halfway out of the bog hole and my dad yelled, ‘stop’ and told me that it had snapped. I thought, ‘Bloody Bog Off, they’re supposed to be unbreakable!’ But then I worked out that it had sliced through the strap and half of the loop, and then I looked at how close my brakes were and thought, ‘hmmm, maybe this was user error’ and ‘bummer I wrecked my new Bog Out’.

So I reattached the same Bog Out (even though it was a little bit broken) with Method 2 and repeated the process. It came out as easy as anything! You little ripper!

We reversed a bit further, I undid the special knot things easily, and chucked the Bog Out in the Back of the Cruiser. Then we broke out a cold one (it was only Light Beer) in celebration (I also got a new second hand car fridge that I wanted to try out).

A bit of a crazy adventure, but an adventure nonetheless, and I learnt a heap about 4wding!

    Tip: In the absence of a diff lock, try feathering the brake to stop the free wheel spinning, thereby transferring engine power to the wheel with the Bog Out. Alternatively, buy and fit a second Bog Out, so both wheels are tied and working.

      Yes, as you know, the Twin option is always recommended. We were impressed that in the end, the Single got our customer out of trouble.
